So you've just returned home after living abroad for a few years and you're feeling a little off. You can't quite put your finger on it but something just doesn't feel right. Don't worry, this is a common experience known as reverse culture shock.
How Japan Changed Me!

When I first moved to Japan, I was excited to experience a new culture and way of life. I immersed myself in the local customs and traditions and eventually started to feel like a real part of the community.
But as my time in Japan came to an end and I prepared to return home, I started to feel anxious. I worried about how I would readjust to my old life and if I would still feel like I fit in back home.
Upon returning to the US, I found that some things had changed while I was away. The pace of life was faster, people seemed more stressed, and the culture shock I experienced in Japan was now reversed.
For example, I was used to the Japanese custom of bowing when greeting people. When I returned to the US, I found myself bowing to people out of habit, only to be met with confused looks.
Additionally, I was used to the Japanese sense of respect and politeness. I found myself frustrated with the more direct and confrontational communication style in the US.
It took me a while to readjust to my old life, but eventually I was able to find a balance between my experiences in Japan and my life back home.
Reverse Culture Shock! KOREA->USA
When I returned to the US after living in Korea for several years, I was surprised by how much had changed. I wasn't prepared for the differences, both large and small, that I encountered.
One of the biggest things that I noticed was the emphasis on individualism in the US. In Korea, society is much more collectivist and there is a greater focus on the group as a whole.
Another thing that took some getting used to was the lack of consideration for others in public spaces. In Korea, people are very conscious of those around them and generally try to be respectful. In the US, people tend to do whatever they want, regardless of how it might affect others.
But it wasn't just the big cultural differences that caused me to feel disoriented. Small things, like the lack of kimchi at the grocery store or the absence of street food vendors, made me feel like something was missing.
Overall, my experience with reverse culture shock was a difficult one. But I've learned that it's important to be open-minded and patient when adjusting to new surroundings. With time and effort, you can learn to love and appreciate your new home just as much as your old one.
